The theme of the song is inspired by the words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew:
“Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns,
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not of more value than they?” (Matthew 6:26) and
“Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing?
and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows”
Why do I feel discouraged, why do the shadows come,
Why does my heart feel lonely, and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion. My constant Friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.
So I sing because I’m happy, and I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.(2x)
